Kurdish-led military coalition that administers the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (Rojava). The SDF is dominated by the Democratic Union Party (PYD) and its armed wing, the YPG. It controls significant territory in northeastern Syria and has a tense relationship with the HTS-led Damascus government. The United States partnered with the SDF against the Islamic State from 2015 onward.
Caretaker administration established after December 2024 led by Prime Minister Mohammad al-Bashir. The transitional government controls central Syrian state ministries but does not administer SDF territory in the northeast or remaining areas of Turkish-backed opposition control. It faces the task of reconstituting state institutions hollowed out by years of civil war and sanctions.
